How does Gorilla Trekking benefit the Mountain Gorillas?

All of the money from your Gorilla permit goes towards to paying the guides, trackers, rangers, the infrastructure of Bwindi National Park, anti-poaching units, and everything else that goes into protecting these gorillas. Gorilla Trekking in Uganda has proved to be one of the most successful and sustainable models of wildlife tourism in the world. In a 2010 census by the UWA, there were 786 mountain gorillas in the world. Today, there are a little over 1,000. These numbers are proof that supporting gorilla trekking and other wildlife based tourism in these National Parks can protect these endangered Gorillas.

When To Go?

Gorilla Trekking can be done throughout the entire year. It can also be done in the rainy season, although the tracks in the rain forest might be a bit muddier and your tracking might be a bit longer/ tougher compared to the dry season, which is the best time to track gorillas. However, the best time to go gorilla trekking is during the months of December to February as well as June to August. These are the driest months of the year in Uganda and it is when the country sees big numbers of tourists as compared to the wet months where the number of tourists is less.

General Information

  • Gorilla families move daily and never remain in an area for a long period of time as they are constantly on the move in search of food and safety. UWA expert trackers and guides will lead you to the elusive Gorillas.

  • Gorilla Permits must be booked far in advance due to limited supply and high demand, especially during the high season. Safaris By Jon is a licensed tour operator in Uganda and Gorilla Permits can only be purchased through operators such as ourselves.

  • Only 8 visitors are allowed to view the Gorillas for one hour per day, participants must be aged 15 or over. and they will be accompanied by UWA Rangers and guides while with the Gorillas. Tracking the Gorillas can last from a few hours to a whole day, depending on how far the group has moved since it was observed nesting up the previous evening. Clients can request for shorter or longer treks before the trip and the use of local porters to carry heavy equipment is advised.
