How do the chimpanzees benefit?

Money from your Chimpanzee Permit funds the guides, trackers, rangers, the infrastructure of National Parks, anti-poaching units, and everything else that goes into protecting these chimpanzees. Chimpanzee Trekking in Africa has proven to be one of the most successful and sustainable models for the conservation of chimpanzees.

When To Go?

Chimpanzee Trekking can be done at anytime of the year, however the best time to visit are the hot and dry months of January, February, June, July, and August when animals will stay closer to water sources.

The rainy season runs from September to December and March to May. It is still possible to see the chimpanzees during the rainy season, you just will have to work harder as the roads and trails are more difficult to use.

General Information

  • Chimpanzee Permits must be booked far in advance due to limited supply and high demand, especially during the high season. Safaris By Jon is a licensed tour operator in Uganda and Chimpanzee Permits can only be purchased through operators such as ourselves.

  • Many chimpanzee trekking sites in Uganda offer travelers two sessions of being with these primates. Each chimpanzee trekking session must not have more than 8 tourists. The first session is in the morning from 8am and the second is done in the afternoon from 2pm. With this, the traveler is given chance to choose on which session to take depending on his or her schedule. However one must take note that in the morning the chimpanzees are usually mobile and up in the trees because it is their time to feed and hunt while in the afternoon they at times come down to the ground for resting, grooming each other and mating.
